British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of all things science, technology, engineering and maths. This year’s theme is something we’re very passionate about here at Hyper Recruitment Solutions: ‘Smashing Stereotypes’.
The ultimate goal of this year’s theme is to “challenge long-standing stereotypes, with the aim of encouraging more young people, from all backgrounds, to see themselves as scientists”.
What do you see when you picture a scientist? Most people imagine a man in a lab coat working with test tubes and Bunsen burners. This ‘default’ idea of what a scientist looks like is exactly what British Science Week 2024 aims to change.
Scientists all over the globe have shared their stories with the hopes of inspiring a future generation of scientists from all walks of life. You can read some of them on the British Science Week website.
Why is diversity important for science?
As with any area of expertise, diversity drives science forward. So much of scientific progress relies on problem solving and teamwork. Bringing together people of different ages, genders and identities, with differing points of view and areas of expertise, inspires more creative and innovative ideas.
By showing that incredible careers in science are available to everyone, the organisers of British Science Week hope to encourage people of all backgrounds and identities to enter the world of science.
What do different science jobs look like?
British Science Week 2024 isn’t just aiming to broaden our idea of what scientists look like – it also wants to smash our preconceptions about science jobs. While many scientists that do work in very stereotypical ‘science’ settings, there are so many science jobs out there that have nothing to do with laboratories and test tubes.
There are hundreds of jobs in science across practically every industry, including food, technology, engineering and so many more. Whoever you are and whatever your passion in life, there is a science role out there for you.
Here are some super interesting, lesser-known science jobs that might interest you:
- Robotics Engineer
- Food Scientist
- Acoustics Consultant
- Fragrance Chemist
- Intelligence Analyst
- Environmental Consultant
- Computation Biologist
