Role Overview

Histotechnologist I work under general supervision precisely and accurately performs a variety of routine and specialized histology techniques and procedures. The Histotechnologist I will research, troubleshoot, and resolve histology related inquiries and problems within the laboratory. This position requires the production of the highest quality of embedding, microtomy, tissue grossing, tissue processing, H&E staining, manual and automated special staining, immunohistochemistry, and equipment maintenance.
Histotechnologist II works under minimal direction will consistently and accurately perform either a greater number or more varied amount of complex or difficult tasks and assignments than the work performed by a Histotechnologist I.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Histotechnologist I Responsibilities:
• Receives tissue specimens and ensures proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples
• Processes paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting
• Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to established Standard Operating Procedures
• Performs microtomy according to established Standard Operating Procedures
• Embeds processed tissue in paraffin wax
• Performs coverslipping of stained slides either manually or automated, all special stain procedures according to established SOPs, and filing of blocks and slides
• Responds promptly to pathologists, technologists, and administrative requests
• Maintains laboratory in a clean, functional state, as well as cleaning, performing or scheduling equipment and instrument maintenance/calibration/certification, as required. Documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests
• Demonstrates initiative in making suggestions to improve efficiency and productivity and provides consistent feedback
• Participates in quality control initiatives. Prepares lab for inspection from regulatory institutions
Histotechnologist II Responsibilities:
• Must demonstrate proficiency in all core responsibilities of a Histotechnologist I
• Assumes initiative for prompt, accurate performance of test results with appropriate documentation of result
• Performs newly validated tests to the laboratory that require defined skills
• Proficient in all applicable areas of testing in the department
• Proficient in troubleshooting all applicable instruments/procedures in the department
• Adheres to laboratory quality control policies and documents all quality control activities; has the ability to recognize outliers and correct them
• Identifies problems that may affect test performance or reporting of test results and resolves or immediately reports to the department supervisor or lead technologist
• Must be familiar and knowledgeable of general and specialty requirements within CAP/CLIA/NYS institutions
Histotechnologist Responsibilities III:
• Must demonstrate proficiency in all core responsibilities of a Histotechnologist I and II.
• Differentiates acceptable and unacceptable processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining of tissue specimens
• Resolves when prescribed techniques and equipment should be modified to meet special conditions and to expedite diagnosis

Role Requirements

• Histotechnologist I: One to three years as an ASCP certified Histotechnician/Histotechnologist preferred.
• Histotechnologist II :Four (4) to six (6) years as an ASCP certified Histotechnician/Histotechnologist preferred.
• Histotechnologist III: Six or more years as an ASCP certified Histotechnician/Histotechnologist preferred.
