What is bioprocessing?
Bioprocessing is the process of using complete living cells or their components to create desired products. Bioprocessing operations can use microbial, animal, or plant cells or cell components (e.g. enzymes) to create new products. Some of the products that are created via bioprocessing include antibiotics and vaccines.
Why is bioprocessing important?
Bioprocessing is used the production of many items essential to our daily lives, including pharmaceuticals, foods, fuels, and chemicals. Bioprocessing provides many benefits to society.
What are the three stages of bioprocessing?
- Upstream processing – the selection and preparation of raw materials, enzymes, or microorganisms, and equipment sterilisation.
- Bioprocess – also sometimes referred to as fermenting, this is where the magic happens! All of your components are combined in a fermenter and the product is formed.
- Downstream processing – your final product is recovered, packaged, and marketed.
